“Ange terrible” – Anastasiya Petryshak's second album is out

The Italian-Ukrainian violinist together with the pianist Lorenzo Meo faces the great masterpieces of Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Olivier Messiaen

  • News

Anastasiya Petryshak, Italian-Ukrainian violinist among the most interesting young international concert stars, releases her second CD Angel terrible for the prestigious labelSony Classical. Outgoing on January 27, 2023, the disc will be distributed in all physical stores in Italy and in the world and on all digital platforms. Born in Ukraine and trained in Italy at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona under the guidance of Salvatore Accardo, the young violinist already has a significant career under her belt that has led her to play in many prestigious halls around the world, from Europe to the United States, in South Africa, Mexico, South Korea and beyond. After her debut album Loved well dedicated to Vivaldi, Anastasiya Petryshak in his second recording project Ange terrible faces, together with the pianist Lorenzo Meo, the great masterpieces of Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel is Olivier Messiaen. The project focuses on French music written between 1891 and 1941, includes the period of the two World Wars and highlights the duality between good and evil. “Music of deep meaning that arises in times of suffering and destruction, when souls were more sensitive than ever. In these pages live the thoughts and ideas of the great composers who knew the war. I hope this CD can make people think and bring light to today's times.” declares Anastasiya Petryshak, who touches the deepest strings, on the one hand the purest, angelic and full of hope, and on the other the darker, more intense and with no way out.Angel terrible includes some of the most important and demanding pieces not only from a virtuosic point of view but also from a chamber and musical point of view: written by the major French composers of the early twentieth century, they trace a sound path of great emotional intensity, characterized by suggestive contrasts deployed by an infinite palette of nuances dynamics and timbres. The record opens with the intense Sonata no. 3 of Claude Debussy, written when the First World War was at the gates of Paris, a tribute to the golden age of French music and the Maestro's last composition, full of chiaroscuro and mystery. Another very fascinating piece of his follows, Les Angelus, originally for voice and transcribed for violin and piano.Of Maurice Ravel there are three works: the Sonata n. 2 which includes the Blues of the second movement and the famous Perpetuum mobile of the final; a transcription for violin and piano, Pièce en forme de Habanera, inspired by the sensual Spanish dance, and finally the Concert rhapsody Gypsy, a very famous virtuosic piece and workhorse of all the greatest violinists. The recording closes with two pieces of spiritual and philosophical intensity by Olivier Messiaen: the first, Theme and Variations, is a work written by the composer for himself and his violinist wife, almost an informal wedding gift; the second, Louange à l'Immortalité de Jésus, is the last movement of the famous "Quatuor pour la fin du temps".The piece, which is also the piece chosen to conclude the musical journey of the CD, was thus described by Messiaen "His slow ascent towards the extreme high register is the ascension of man towards his God, of the son of God towards his Father, of the deified creature towards Paradise." Written amid the horrors of war, by the composer prisoner in a concentration camp where the quatuor resounded for the first time, represents a positive and hopeful message to inspire even today.
