Mina’s life is turned upside down when she learns that her husband Babak was innocent of the crime for which he was executed. The authorities apologize for the mistake and offer the prospect of financial compensation, but Mina starts a silent battle against a cynical system for her own and her daughter's sake. Mina’s leven staat op zijn kop wanneer ze bij de rechtbank hoort dat haar man Babak een jaar eerder ten onrechte is geëxecuteerd. De rechter verklaart dat het dan toch de wil van Allah geweest moet zijn, anders was het niet gebeurd. De autoriteiten verontschuldigen zich en willen Mina financiële compensatie bieden voor het leed dat zij veroorzaakt hebben. In het belang van haar dochter en haarzelf start Mina een stil protest tegen het systeem. Net wanneer ze bijna door haar geld heen is, staat Reza voor haar deur en beweert een oude vriend van Babak te zijn. Reza had nog een schuld uitstaan bij hem en komt deze nu betalen. Hoewel Mina in het begin wat terughoudend is, laat ze hem steeds meer in haar leven toe. Niet wetende wat het verband is dat ze bij elkaar bracht. Ballad of a White Cow is de derde film van Iraanse regisseursduo Maryam Moghadam en Behtash Sanaeeha. Eerder werkten ze al samen aan het script van Risk of Acid Rain en regisseerden ze The Invincible Diplomacy of Mr Naderi.
