Chicago head coach Doug Collins on facing the Cleveland Cavaliers, who were 6-0 against the Bulls during the regular season, in the first round of the NBA playoffs: "7 like Ihe challenge of being the underdog. When you're backed in a corner, you know what you're made of. Until Ihey beat us three times, we're all even." quiet," Moore said. "I'd have hated for that to have been me and then someone come along and say, 'You doh have the But Moore's 50 victories were listed in the Sorth Carolina state record book, and soon the word was out.

Moore's record is in the process of being submitted to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Peters tied the record April 21 in a 3-1 victory over Katy Taylor High School. Peters pitched a two-hitter, struck out 12 and retired the last 15 batters in order. Peters, a senior who has agreed to attend Texas next fall, was 13-0 as a freshman, 15-0 as a sophom*ore and 14-0 as a junior, leading Brenham to state Class 4A titles each year. He's 8-0 so far this year.

He has four no-hitters, including back-to-back hitless victories this season. The national record for total career victories is 61 by Steve Streater, Sylva Webster, N.C., in 1974-77. Moore never pitched after high school. He lost the final two games of his career and finished 50-2. He walked on at Clemson and didn't make the team but remained as a student to get his degree rather than accept offers from smaller schools.

Tuning In Jon Peters of Brenham, Texas, will have the support of Tim Moore tonight when Peters tries to break Moore's national record of 50 consecutive high school pitching victories. Moore, now 27 and a management trainee at Carolina Freight Centers in Kings Mountain, N.C., will be in the stands at Brenham High School's baseball field when Peters goes for his 51st consecutive victory against Consolidated. "I hope Jon gets it, I wish him all the luck in the world," Moore said. "I didn't get much recognition for it until last year. I'm sorry it came at Jon's expense." Moore never knew that his 50 consecutive victories in 1977-1980 for McColl, S.C., was a national record until last year when stories started appearing about Peters setting the national record of 34 straight victories.

The National Federation of State High School Associations listed the national record at 33 victories by Mike Pill of West Covina, Calif. But a story in Sports Illustrated enlightened Moore of the record he'd set eight years earlier. "I really didn't know anything about it," Moore said. "Then I got a phone call one night, and a guy told me about the Peters story. Friday NBA Playoffs 7:05 p.m.
