She was born on May 27, 1920 in Canton, New York and was the sixth and last child of Parker John and Annie Laurie Morgan. Known to teammates the varsity women's basketball team at New York State University as to petulant teenagers as "Sarge" and, finally, to everyone as Helen was an avid and talented athlete. AFter mastering football, baseball and basketball with the help of her two older brothers, Dolly decided, in the 1940s, to become a golfer.

Ultimately, she won the City of Pensacola women's golf championship, became the president of the Florida State Women's Amateur Golf Association, scored many and played regularly with her cohorts at the Pensacola Country Club, even in her declining years. Dolly came by her nickname honestly. Her many friends were convinced she was the model for the lead character in the famous Broadway musical, for she was energetic, charismatic, inclined to burst into song, and unfailingly of good humor. It was her solemn duty to liven up any gathering or occasion and she was able to do this even through the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease. Dolly is survived by her husband, Roger Davis Sherman, M.D.; her children, Roger Morgan Sherman (C.J.), Laurie Elizabeth Sherman (Thomas Thiele) and Alice Sherman Patterson.
