Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Senior Internal Auditor position performs advanced auditactivities across a full range of programmatic functions,processes, and systems to support the Office of Internal Audit. Theposition is tasked with planning and conducting operational,compliance, financial, and special audits or consultations with theobjective of providing assurance that 1) internal controls areadequate and effective, 2) operations promote efficiency andcompliance with policies, applicable laws and regulations, and 3)assets of the university are properly protected. This position willbe expected to perform as Auditor-in-Charge on assigned engagementsand ensure audits follow prescribed audit standards andtimelines.
The position also serves as a technical resource for the InternalAudit office to interpret and assess unprecedented issues and actas an advisor and resource to campus constituents in riskidentification and resolution. This may include, but is not limitedto, interpreting policies and procedures, participating on standingcommittees, completing limited-life projects, attending ad hocmeetings, and engaging in routine information exchange.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
A Master’s degree in accounting or a discipline related to theprogram area with at least 2 years of related experience or aBachelor’s degree in accounting or a discipline related to theprogram area and 3 years related experience, or will accept acombination of equivalent education and experience in substitution.All degrees must be received from appropriately accreditedinstitutions.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills &Experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in internal or external audit and assuranceservices.
- Previous experience working in higher education.
- Demonstrated experience in risk assessment, analyzing businessprocesses, and internal controls evaluation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to be successful in theposition include:
- Knowledge and skill in applying the Principles of GenerallyAccepted Auditing Standards.
- Knowledge of the International Professional Practices Frameworkof Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing andthe Code of Ethics developed by the Institute of InternalAuditors.
- Ability to plan, assign and/or complete audit activities withinestablished deadlines and meet established goals andobjectives.
- Ability to read and interpret policies, procedures, andregulations and ability to test conformance to thosestandards.
- Considerable skill in collecting and analyzing complex data,evaluating information and systems, and drawing logicalconclusions.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple assignmentsto effectively manage a fast paced and changing work environmentwithout compromising accuracy.
- Ability to identify problems and risks and recommendmodifications and solutions.
- Ability to negotiate issues and resolve problems.
- Proficiency with using Microsoft Office products includingWord, Excel, Access, and SharePoint and experience in using dataanalytic tools.
- Strong and effective verbal and written communications,including active listening skills, interviewing skills, andexperience with presenting findings and recommendations.
- Ability to write communications that convey concise andcomprehensive information.
- Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate and maintainharmonious working relationships with co-workers, staff, faculty,students, and external contacts, and to work effectively in aprofessional team environment.
- Ability to build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation withinthe university’s formal and informal structures.
- Ability to consistently meet internal and external customerneeds and expectations in a professional manner.

Required Certifications or Licensures
Position requires certification, to include one of thefollowing:
- Certified Internal Auditor ( CIA );
- Certified Public Accountant ( CPA );
- Certified Information Systems Auditor ( CISA );
- Certified Fraud Examiner ( CFE ).
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of Internal Audit provides independent, objectiveassurance and consulting services designed to add value and improvethe operations of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. TheOffice of Internal Audit assists the university in accomplishingits objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach toevaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control,and governance processes. The Office of Internal Audit supports themission of the university by partnering with university managementand assisting the Board of Trustees, through the Audit, Risk andCompliance Committee, in the effective discharge of theirresponsibilities to protect the assets and reputation of theuniversity and to promote operational effectiveness andefficiency.
The Office of Internal Audit conducts audits, consultations, andinvestigations related to all university entities, systems, andfunctions in accordance with an annual plan of coverage based on aninstitution-wide risk assessment. Internal Audit also coordinatesaudit activities with the Internal Audit staff at the UNC SystemOffice and with the Office of the State Auditor.
